We’re Not All Meant To Be Pastors!

June 29, 2012

“May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands.” (Psalm 90:17, NIV

So often we enter a new career with the wrong motives – money, prestige, and even pressure from our parents or peers. Failing to match our work with our God-given talents is often overlooked.

Some people think that beginning a new career in “full-time Christian work” will fill the emptiness they feel inside. The problem is not whether we should be in “Christian work” or “secular work”, but rather in work that is inspired by our gifts and calling. Not all of us are meant to be pastors or missionaries.

Believe it or not, if you are a Christian, you are in full-time Christian work, whether you are driving nails or preaching the gospel. The question must be: are you achieving the God-given calling for your life? God has called each of us into our workplaces to fulfill His purposes just as much as He has called other people to be pastors or missionaries. It is time for us to stop feeling like second-class citizens for being in “working” jobs. It is time for us to realize that we have all been called by God to do His work wherever we are!

Return to Him!

June 28, 2012

“Return to me,” declares the Lord Almighty, “and I will return to you”. (Zechariah 1:3, NIV)

As we go through life, there are times when we are extremely close to the Lord, and there are times when we fall away from Him. Human nature pushes us to follow our own desires. It tempts us to satisfy ourselves first and to think about the consequences later. It drives us into sin and destruction, and keeps us from maintaining a close, personal relationship with our Savior.

Zechariah 1:3 is a promise. No matter how far we drift away from the Lord, He is always ready to take us back. All we need to do is to “return to Him”. Once we realize He is always here for us, our relationship with Him will grow beyond belief. The times of falling away will become fewer and fewer.

Return to Him every hour of every day! Enjoy your Thursday, “Working for Christ”!

Your Life Doesn’t Really Belong To You!

June 27, 2012

“Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.” (Jeremiah 10:23, NIV)

We need clear instruction in our lives. We need to know where we’re headed and what’s expected of us. On our own, we often feel lost and discouraged. And, just as we need direction from our boss for a project at work, we also need direction from God, our spiritual boss, for the things we do every single day.

I’ve found that the moments when I begin to feel lost and discouraged in my life are when I’ve missed talking to God. I’ve tried to figure things out on my own instead of getting direction from Him.

If you’re feeling lost and discouraged, the answers are closer than you think. Reading your Bible and praying are the best ways to discover God’s will. By going directly to Him, you won’t be left to wander in the dark alone. As you turn to Him, watch as answers come much more quickly.

The purpose and theme of Proverbs is “for gaining wisdom and understanding; for understanding words of insight”. (Proverbs 1:2, NIV)

We all know how to live peaceful, prosperous, genuine, and fulfilling lives. We’ve read the books, gone to the seminars, and listened to most of the “experts” on the subject. We have all the information we need. We just don’t always know how to apply it. That’s why God had Solomon develop the book of Proverbs. Proverbs has a very unique perspective on wisdom and understanding. There is only one kind of wisdom in the world – God’s! Everything except God’s wisdom is foolishness. Everything! From the boardroom to the bedroom, it’s only God’s wisdom that counts. The best part about God’s wisdom is that it is easily accessible, simple to understand, and imminently practical. It is also progressive. God says that He will give you wisdom as you obey what you already know. Obedience is the key that unlocks the door to knowing God’s will for you. When you obey on the smallest detail, you will discover that you know what to do next. If you refuse to obey on the smallest detail, all the rest will seem futile.

Start this Tuesday by being obedient to God’s will. Seek His wisdom throughout the day. Enjoy the rest of your week, “Working for Christ”!

Out of Sight, Out of Mind?

June 25, 2012

“Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” declares the Lord. “Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:24, NIV)

We might be able to hide things from one another, but there is absolutely no way to keep the Lord from knowing our innermost feelings or secrets. He knows everything we do publicly and in private. He knows our hearts and He knows our souls! He lives within us and goes with us wherever we go.

To some people the thought of Him being everywhere and knowing everything is a bit discomforting. To others, His presence brings total comfort and peace. If you’re feeling any discomfort over His omnipotence, you just need to get to know Him a little better. Spend a little time in His word this Monday. Take Him with you into your “secret places”. Enjoy your day, “Working for Christ”!

Heavenly Values Last Forever!

June 18, 2012

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:2, NIV)

When we pray the Lord’s prayer, we ask God for His will to be done “on earth as it is in Heaven” (Matthew 6:10, NIV). Very simply, Christ is asking us to begin living eternity right now – while we are here on earth. We are to focus on His life and His teachings every day so that we live our lives in a way that will be an example for others to follow. Our minds should be set on “things above” when we first wake up in the morning and continue throughout the day until we go to sleep in the evening.

Earthly things have no value whatsoever. They don’t last; they are temporary. They pass away when we pass away. Heavenly values last forever, throughout eternity! They will never pass away!

Set your mind on “things above” this Monday. Begin living for eternity – right now! Enjoy your day, “Working for Christ”!

The Cure For Being Human!

June 15, 2012

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.” (Romans 8:12-13, NIV)

Paul says that part of God’s purpose for, and part of making sense of our lives, is for us to live a life in which Christ is the main focus. If we live according to our humanly desires and we allow our obsessions and addictions (sins) to control us, we will fail miserably. But, if we accept the Holy Spirit into our hearts and into our minds, we will be infused with the power to act upon our humanly, sinful desires in a way that will allow us to defeat them. We will never be completely “cured” of being human, but we will find greater peace and comfort in all aspects of our lives. We will begin to find the true peace that can only be found in Christ Jesus!

Call upon the Holy Spirit this Friday to help you “put to death the misdeeds of your body”! Enjoy your weekend, “Working for Christ”!
