Who’s Directing Your Boat?

“You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?”  (Matthew 16:8-10, NIV)

Jesus’ disciples are a captive audience in the boat. He is once again teaching His disciples regarding matters of greater importance, yet they, like so many of us, turn their questions and concerns to their own basic needs.
As they are crossing the lake, the disciples remember the bread they forgot to take with them, and are anxious about where their next meal will come from. Didn’t they realize who was in the boat with them and what He had just done? In His response, Jesus drew their attention to seeing the important things from God’s level, which had nothing to do with food. They’d been looking through the eyes of human scarcity, forgetting the power right there in their midst – Jesus was in the boat!

Like the disciples, as we walk with Jesus through the day and learn from Him, we will begin to see things from His perspective and not from our own. Oh, those bills will still come. The auto insurance may still get cancelled. But He will teach us to rely on Him and to trust in Him and not in our own wisdom or our own ability to solve problems. We may still be alarmed from time to time because we’re short on bread, but with Jesus directing our boat we know that we can weather any storm! Enjoy your Thursday, “Working for Christ”!
