Where Is Your Treasure?

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21, NIV)

We are taught from an early age to “live the American dream” – to have a wife (or husband), a couple of kids, a house, two or three cars, nice jobs with benefits, and savings/retirement plans to keep us financially secure in the event of an emergency or our ultimate retirement.

Once we own our home, we need to buy furniture, a lawnmower, a weed eater, and all of the accessories that go with that house. Before long, we realize that our neighbors have more things than we do and our kids aren’t wearing the latest fashions. Our cars are getting old and everyone we know has newer cars. Compared to all of our friends and neighbors, we’re beginning to feel poor. Our neighborhood is beginning to deteriorate – it’s time to move. We need a bigger and better house. It’s time to get that BMW we’ve always wanted. We need to get the kids into a private school where they’ll be able to be more “successful” in life. We need better jobs! We need more money!

And so, the American dream lives on!

When we stop to evaluate our lives here on earth and plan for eternity (not just for the rest of our lives), do any of these things really matter? Absolutely not! If we look to our homes, cars, jobs, or savings accounts for peace and comfort and for our security as we enter into eternity, we are going to be sorely disappointed. The only thing that truly matters on this earth is our relationship with our Savior! If we look to Him for our peace and comfort, He will always provide exactly what we need. Our heart contains our treasure. Keep Christ close to your heart at all times! Make sure He is your only true treasure!
