Greed And Envy!

“But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” (Psalm 73:2-3, NIV)

About once every ten years there seems to be a crisis in the financial world. In the 1980’s there was an agricultural loan bust. In the 1990’s the crisis involved leveraged buyouts. And in this decade the problem involved subprime mortgages. Loose credit standards allowed unsuspecting borrowers to buy things they really couldn’t afford. It is the lender’s responsibility is to make a good investment. If they do their job well, they also safeguard the welfare of their clients – us. By simply saying “no” when the borrower does not have the capacity to repay the loan, the lender could possibly save the borrower from financial disaster. In this case, the lenders just kept saying “yes”! You’ve seen, and continue to feel, the result.

What drives these periodic financial calamities? Sometimes it’s just an error in judgment, but many times it ties back to greed and envy. Someone finds a niche they can exploit. Soon other lenders hear about the short term increased profits of their peers and envy kicks in. Before long it becomes an entire industry trend. It usually is very profitable for a couple of years, because it takes awhile for the problems to surface. When they do, it becomes so widespread that everyone tries to pull out as quickly as possible making the losses even worse.

In business it is easy to have a “herd” mentality and wind up as another casualty. This was about to happen to Asaph in Psalm 73, but he caught himself. We can learn from his wisdom -
If you are tempted to envy your peers, pause and consider the consequences. Don’t chase today’s trends just for the sake of making more money.

Spend time in prayer and in relationship with Christ Jesus so your decisions honor and glorify our heavenly Father. Don’t get caught up in the world of greed and envy! It just isn’t worth it!
