No Degree Required!

“When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13, NIV)

A college degree is not a pre-requisite to fulfill your vocation; very simply, spiritual conditioning (that which comes from “having been with Jesus”) is the only requirement. It was this type of conditioning, or training, that allowed the apostles to fill Jerusalem with the Good News by leading thousands of people to Christ.

“So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith” (Acts 6:7, NIV).

Jerusalem was completely transformed by the apostles – regular guys like you and me – fishermen, tax collectors, farmers, and more. Because of their leadership and commitment to Christ, the new believers in Jerusalem began to sell their property and their possessions so they could give their excess to anyone who had need (see Acts 2:45). Jerusalem’s widows were no longer forgotten. They started to receive a daily ration of food (see Acts 6:1).

Solomon’s Porch became the place of worship for the early believers (see Acts 5:12-14). As Christianity grew, the streets and sidewalks of Jerusalem became evangelistic venues where sick people gathered hoping to be healed by Peter, or at least by his shadow as he walked by them (see Acts 5:15). Soon people from nearby cities gathered in Jerusalem. They, too, became healed (see Acts 5:16).

Can you imagine what this must have been like! What a transformation! The city that had once brought Jesus to tears was now giving Him incredible joy (see Luke 19:41)!

This transformation came about because a few people truly understood their calling from Christ. They weren’t scholars or ordained pastors; they were just regular people working within their vocations – people just like you and me who value their relationship with Jesus Christ above everything else.

Stay focused! Enjoy your Wednesday, “Working for Christ”!
