“Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you — for you know in your heart that many times you yourself have cursed others.” (Ecclesiastes 7:21-22, NIV)

People are going to talk. At times they are going to talk about you. Sometimes they’re going to talk behind your back. Other times they are going to come right out and tell you exactly what’s on their mind. They are going to say positive things about you, and they’re going to spread lies about you. They are going to build you up, and they are going to tear you down.

I think you get the picture. Sometimes it’s important to just let people be people. We all make mistakes. We all say things that we regret. It’s important to recognize that, as humans, we are going to say things we really don’t mean. We all have done it. We need to forgive those who do it to us.

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14, NIV)

Whether we are Christian, atheist, agnostic, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, or none of the above, we are all judged by the way we act, by the way we speak, and by the way we live our lives. Any of us can destroy our lives by entering through the wide gate – by talking behind each other’s backs, by cursing each other, or by not respecting one another. That’s easy.

It isn’t always easy to watch what we say or to keep our mouths shut. But when we do, it honors God and it brings us one step closer to the small gate and the narrow road – the road that leads to Life.

It takes discipline and a conscious effort to stay on the right path, but when we do, our co-workers and business associates will remember us as people who do not compromise our values for anyone. Most importantly, staying on the right path pleases the Lord!
