WAITING FOR THE CALL?

“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. ‘Follow me,’ he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” (Matthew 9:9, NIV)

Are you sitting around waiting for God to “call” and tell you what to do with your life?

He’s already spoken. He’s spoken through the teachings found throughout the bible. All we have to do is follow His wisdom and we can’t go wrong – no matter what specific vocation we choose.

God wants to guide us in our work lives, but if we sit around and wait for His audible voice we may be waiting a very long time. God most often speaks to us through His “inaudible voice” – the Holy Spirit.

God also speaks through the story of creation. We are His craftsmanship, the creation of His hands. He gave us our gifts, talents, passions and desires. These things didn’t happen by accident. They were intentional. Each of us has been specifically design by Him for a specific purpose. He wants us to be who we are, not someone we aren’t. If He has given us wings, then we are to fly!

The idea of “a calling” suggests that there is only one thing that God wants us to do for the rest of our lives. Many people in the Bible, however, did a variety of things over the course of their lives. David started out as a shepherd before he became king. Paul was a religious ruler who later became a tent-maker. Even Jesus started out as a carpenter before becoming the Messiah! God may have a number of things for us to do at different stages of our lives. He never said our paths would be a straight line.

When Steve Jobs built the first Apple computer, he had the signatures of all its designers inscribed on the inside of the computer’s cover.

You have a design written on you, too – inscribed by God. Whatever your gifts and talents may be, they are His idea.

Computers don’t work by accident and neither do you. Get busy – you have a lot to do before you get that final “call”.

Excellent. We are called to “be Holy” to “Glorify God” to “make known the Gospel” these are lifelong task.
It is what we are (what God is doing in us) more than what we do that constitutes our call to leave all and follow Christ.
