In Charles Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol,” Ebenezer Scrooge is a ruthless entrepreneur obsessed with greed. The Ghost of Christmas Past takes him to a pivotal scene in his life, where he had to choose between his girlfriend and his money.

Prior to this event, Scrooge was filled with excessive ambition, but there were still signs of decency for him. Then he chose money. Once his decision was made, Scrooge became obsessed with greed.

In our culture today we see many people who have become obsessed with greed. The United States has amassed more wealth than any other nation, while much of the rest of the world lives in poverty.

There is nothing wrong with being thrifty, or saving for the future, just as long as we live in balance. A lack of balance can be obvious when we choose another hour at the office, at the expense of an important family event. Or it can be when people know you as cheap, rather than generous. There are many warning signals to look for, but looking to your own motives is the best source of truth. Ask yourself why? Why are you chasing after something other than our Savior?

Jesus taught, “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
 (Matthew 6:24, NIV)

Many believe they can love both God and money, but just like Mr. Scrooge, a decision must eventually be made. If you are at that point, or want to change directions, try prayer and repentance, memorize some verses that help during weak moments, and find an accountability partner to ask you the hard questions.

Most importantly, does your life reflect your love for God, or for something else?

This is true. The Lord our God is one lord and we must love Him with all. We can have no other God’s before Him.
