“When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.” (Matthew 14:13-14, NIV)

matthew 14

Jesus sometimes found it hard to get away from the day-to-day pressures of life. He had just received the news that John the Baptist had been beheaded. He wanted to get away to a quiet place to be alone. But the people followed Him and wanted to hear Him teach. He had compassion on them, and healed those who were sick.

We may not be faced with thousands of people gathering around to hear us preach or to witness us heal the sick, but we also face day-to-day pressures in our workplaces. The tasks keep coming. Our supervisors continue to make requests of our time, and their expectations continue to pressure us. Unexpected duties come along. And, we have more to consider than just our work – we also have domestic, family, and other commitments, too.

Jesus wanted to get away from the crowds that day, but instead He served them. He accepted the situation gracefully. This does not mean we should give in when we are overloaded, but it is a reminder to handle our daily pressures gracefully and with God’s help. It is also a reminder that we need to rest. It’s important to serve others, but it is equally important to rest. Rest is essential to our health and well-being.

It was God the Father who set aside an entire day to rest (Exodus 20:8-11, NIV). It’s not only important, but it is commanded that we take a day each week to give honor and glory to our Father.

So, for your health, the health of your family and friends, and the health of your relationship with God, make sure you take time this weekend to spend a day of Sabbath rest with our Heavenly Father.

🙂 Rest, refresh, and recharge… We all need to care for ourselves so that we can care for others. We forget sometimes. Thank you. Have a wonderful weekend and take care! 😀

  3. Oh Dave, I must comment. Some work places don’t give a day off per week. I find it best to go inside to my heart where I love God our Father to rest everyday. There I find strength is given in so so many ways. Inspiration from others is GOOD, especially when it is giving GLORY to the ONE ALMIGHTY. LOVE your posts, inspiration for today I comment.

Rest, or taking time out is essential. Jesus told His disciples to “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” (Mark 6:31 NIV) so what makes us think we have to always go, go, go. If we don’t come apart and rest a while, we’ll come apart mentally and physically.
