“His huge outstretched arms protect you—under them you’re perfectly safe; his arms fend off all harm.” (Psalm 91:4 MSG)

It’s not often I take time to look at slugs. But this morning was different. I was on my way into one of my clients’ office and I nearly stepped on the slimy little guy. He was plugging along at a painstakingly slow pace. His antennae were endlessly probing. His slimy trunk was undulating and there was a small trail of ooze following after him.  As far as I know, this is pretty much general slug behavior.

I picked up a small twig and poked at it. Immediately the antennae popped back inside and the elongated trunk began to shrink slightly. Seeing no further movement I prodded the slug again and eventually flipped it over on its back. Slowly the trunk began to contract and pull itself in as if it wanted to become a ball. But the body never made it that far. Apparently the slug was only flexible enough to fold itself in about halfway. The most vulnerable body part, its underbelly, was still exposed. As I examined this little guy, it became clear to me that life as a slug must be pretty discouraging – even scary at times.

Our lives can be pretty discouraging, too. Even scary.

That’s why I like to read the Psalms of David. David knew a lot about living with a vulnerable underside. For years he ran for his life from King Saul. He ran from desert oasis to mountain cave waiting for some enemy to find him, some spy to expose him, or some soldier to capture him. His vulnerable underside was all too real.

When he felt discouraged, scared, and vulnerable, he knew exactly where to turn – to the God who loves and protects. In David’s words:

“God guards you from every evil, he guards your very life. He guards you when you leave and when you return, he guards you now, he guards you always.” (Psalm 121:7-8  MSG)

So along with David, I’m relieved to say that no matter how many discouraging or scary “slug days” we may have, and no matter how exposed or vulnerable we may feel, we have a God who protects us with His huge outstretched arms. In His embrace we’re perfectly safe.
